The Reverend Dr William H Dallinger, eminent microscopist and eloquent Methodist minister was at the heart of the debate over the clash of science and religion in the second half of the nineteenth century. Convinced of the truth of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution he preached the harmony of science and religion to an at-first reluctant public. No-one, he argued, should fear the revelations of science - provided there was sound evidence; ‘Science shows us more and more, the works of God in nature. Follow where his truth leads!’
